Mumbai on red alert Schools shut, half-day declared by Maharashtra govt amid torrential rains

Mumbai, July 6 (UNI) With torrential rains paralysing life across Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Pune, Satara, and Nashik, the Maharashtra government on Monday issued an official notification declaring a half-day for government and semi-government employees.
Private offices have been strongly advised to implement 'work from home' protocols as flood-like conditions and severe infrastructure disruptions were reported throughout the Konkan region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'Red Alert' for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), forecasting extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by ferocious winds reaching speeds of 80–90 kmph. In response to the intensifying weather, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and stay clear of coastal areas, waterlogged sites, and structures deemed hazardous, including old buildings, large hoardings, and electricity poles.
Approximately 15,000 municipal officers and emergency response personnel have been deployed across the city to manage the crisis. Senior civic officials are monitoring the situation in real-time, urging the public to ignore rumours and rely strictly on official communications. Citizens requiring immediate assistance are directed to call the 24/7 emergency helpline, 1916.
In a move to prioritise student safety, all schools and colleges, both government and private, have been ordered to remain shut.
Furthermore, the University of Mumbai has officially postponed all examinations scheduled for July 6. The university administration stated that a revised examination schedule will be announced in due course.
As flooding continues to impact key arterial roads, bridges, and highways, the state administration remains on high alert, prioritising the restoration of essential services while ensuring public safety remains the top priority.
